THE BLACK CAUCUS WAR AGAINST OBAMA

A civil war is breaking out within the left of the Democratic Party pitting the Congressional Black Caucus against the first African-American president.
The battle began when California Congresswoman Maxine Waters complained publicly about the Administration's failure to do more to help minority-owned businesses in the current recession. (Translation: In the new Stimulus of "Jobs" Bill making its way through Congress, they want a larger take). It continued yesterday when ten members of the Black Caucus refused to participate in a meeting of the House Banking Committee which was considering the bill to restructure financial regulations forcing Chairman Barney Frank to push the bill through by the uncomfortable margin of only 31-27.
The latest shot in the battle was fired by Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) a card carrying regular of the Black Caucus. Faced with the need to investigate the gate crashing at the White House during the recent state dinner for India, he chose to embarrass the Administration by subpoenaing White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers rather than quietly negotiating for her appearance.
That Thompson's action was a deliberate slap in Obama's face is obvious (even though the media has missed it). Since when does a liberal Democratic committee chairman embarrass a liberal Democratic president by forcing a liberal Democratic Social Secretary (from Chicago no less) to resist a subpoena to appear at a hearing? Since he wanted to send a message to Obama and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel that the Black Caucus did not like being taken for granted.
The merits of the controversy are obvious. What possible reason would a Social Secretary, for goodness sakes, have for the assertion of executive privilege that is usually reserved for issues of national security? Obviously, none. But Thompson chose his target well. He struck at the social core of the Chicago Mafia that runs the White House, probably striking within the Obama family as well.
You don't do that to a president of your own party, your own ideology, and even your own race unless you want to make a point.
The friction between the Black Caucus and Obama escalated when Waters berated the Administration for failing to rework a business loan from Goldman Sachs to the Inner City Broadcasting Corporation. Inner City is run by Pierre Sutton, son of Percy Sutton, the long time media giant in the African-American community. Two weeks after she raised the issue in a meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Emanuel, Goldman saw the light and restructured the loan.
Coming on top of liberal angst with the decision by the "peace" president to escalate the war in Afghanistan, this split with the black caucus comes at an awkward time.
But you pay a price when you mess with the African American Caucus and the Suttons. The Obama Administration is feeling it. It's kind of fun to watch!

ONE SENATOR'S CHOICE: OBAMACARE OR REELECTION

A Zogby Poll this week illustrates the stark choice facing Senate Democrats as they have to decide whether or not to vote for ObamaCare. The poll shows that Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln, high up on the list of vulnerable Senate Democrats seeking reelection in 2010, literally faces a choice between being reelected and voting for the bill.
The Zogby Poll shows Arkansans opposed to the Obama/Reid bill by 28-64, with 50 percent "strongly opposed" to the legislation. To swim in the face of such a current of public opinion is risky business for a U.S. senator.
Lincoln's most likely Republican opponent, state Sen. Gilbert Bennett, is hot on her heels in the poll, trailing by only 41-39. But asked who they would support if Lincoln votes for ObamaCare, Arkansas voters switch to Bennett, giving him a 49-36 victory. That Lincoln goes from two points ahead to 13 points behind over one Senate vote illustrates the potency of the opposition to healthcare changes.
Most Arkansans don't know how Lincoln will vote. Forty-two percent predicted that she would back the bill, but 24 percent said she was more likely to oppose it. Thirty-six percent did not know.
Her fellow Arkansas senator, Mark Pryor (D), is also in play on this legislation. Thirty-five percent of his voters think he will vote yes, while 18 percent think he will vote no and 47 percent don't know.
While Pryor is not up for reelection this year, he is also almost certainly signing his political death warrant if he votes for the bill.
This survey, taken by Zogby, was funded by the League of American Voters as part of its efforts to influence swing senators and defeat the healthcare legislation. The League has been running ads in Arkansas aimed at explaining the costs of the bill both for the old and the young. The polling shows that the ads are working.
The League has run ads in Indiana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, Maine, Montana, Colorado, Florida and Connecticut to push swing senators to oppose the bill. It will retain Zogby to do surveys in many of these states to bring home to their senators how strongly those they represent do not want this bill to pass.
Please help the League to fund these efforts. The League has raised over $3 million in its health care campaign but needs $2 million more in the coming months.
As part of the League's work against the bill, Dick went to Arkansas on Thursday, November 19th to tour the state and to publicize the findings of the Zogby Poll. In three press conferences (in Little Rock, Conway, and Hot Springs), Dick warned Senator Lincoln about how strongly her constituents feel about the bill. The recent decision of the federal government to recommend that women abstain from annual mammograms illustrates well, exactly how Obamacare would force a deterioration in the quality of medical care, particularly for the elderly. The panel evaluating the effectiveness of mammograms did not find that they don't work or that they do not save lives. Rather, it found that the lives they save are not "worth" the cost of annual testing. This bureaucratic balancing of human life and financial cost lies at the core of the government managed health care in the Obama Bill. To maximize your chances of avoiding breast cancer, women over 50 should, of course, be tested annually. But to save the government money and to conserve scarce resources, the government would like them to increase their chances of becoming sick and get screened only every other year.
Under our current health care system, the government can only recommend such changes.
But under Obamacare, it can and will require them. This rationing of health care, of course, primarily effects the elderly since it is they who need care the most. Who could ask for a better illustration of how this system would work than the government's sudden discovery that saving lives through mammograms is not worth the cost?

Obama Banks on Congress Dems to Push Health Plan

Having stuck his neck out — through trial balloons suggesting a possible abandonment of the public option — President Barack Obama is now retreating into Fort Democrat and relying on his own party members to jam through healthcare legislation. With 60 senators and a 76-vote margin in the House, he need not compromise or even listen to Republicans.
He can invoke the so-called "nuclear option" and pass his bill in the Senate with just 50 votes and no possibility of real debate, much less a filibuster.
So no matter how low Obama's plan sinks in the polls, he feels that he can rely on his loyal troops to march in lockstep and pass his healthcare proposals.
The firestorm of protest his possible abandonment of the public option set off represented a signal to him from the party's left: We will stay with you through thick and thin, just don't compromise.
Can he pull it off? Probably. Except if the elderly block vote against him in the polls.
Already seniors oppose his plan by 32-49 in the latest FoxNews poll. If their margin of disagreement swells . . . and their anger continues to manifest in the town hall meetings and other public gatherings . . . and senators and congressmen are deluged by handwritten letters from seniors opposing the bill, there is a chance to stop it.
Ever since Franklin D. Roosevelt passed Social Security in 1937 and Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through Medicare and Medicaid in 1965, the elderly have block voted for the Democratic Party.
Their support is one of the core elements on which the party continues to rely for its political backing.
If the Democrats can be convinced that there is a real chance that healthcare reform, financed by Medicare cuts, will reverse the elderly's staunch Democratic devotion, they may not cast the fateful votes.
After all, just as education is primarily a concern for parents usually in their 20s and 30s, healthcare is mainly an issue for the elderly (particularly since all children can get insurance through the SCHIP program Bill Clinton passed).
If the elderly manifest their outrage and concern, the Democrats cannot ignore the firestorm of criticism from their traditional base.
No less a figure than Leon Trotsky once said "revolution is impossible until it becomes inevitable." That's our current situation. Stopping healthcare from passing with the top heavy Democratic majorities in both houses is clearly impossible . . . until it becomes inevitable.
That is until the seniors weigh in with massive opposition and red hot intensity.

More bad news for Barack Obama.
The first major book to be published on his presidency has shot up to the #1 spot on The New York Times' bestseller list the very first week of its release.
Unlike the fawning media coverage the Obama White House has come to expect, this new bestseller 'Catastrophe' paints a deeply negative picture of Obama and his policies.
"Catastrophe: How Obama, Congress, and the Special Interests Are Transforming a Slump Into a Crash, Freedom Into Socialism, and a Disaster Into a Catastrophe . . . and How to Fight Back" is authored by Dick Morris and his co-author, wife Eileen McGann. Their book will debut on the Times list on July 12.
One of the nation's top political strategists and a Fox News analyst, Dick Morris argues that Obama has put the nation into free fall, transforming a vulnerable nation into a socialist state while engaging in a program of appeasement abroad that will invite disastrous terrorist attacks in the future.
The authors contend that Americans must act before President Barack Obama fully implements his radical political agenda, because after Obama has won his war on prosperity and canceled the war on terror, it will be too late to regain our liberty or our security.
The book also examines Obama's misguided healthcare proposals, his bailout of the banking and automobile industries, and his plans to cook the census, enfranchise illegal immigrants, muzzle talk radio, and coerce workers into unions — and warns that the administration's policies will lead to an unmitigated "catastrophe."

Now in "Catastrophe," Morris and McGann warn that "doctrinaire socialist" Obama wants to use the recession to put the government in charge of the economy.
Probably the most prominent American political consultant, Dick Morris was a key adviser to numerous Republican candidates across the country, but he is perhaps best known for his work for Bill Clinton.
Morris is almost universally credited with piloting Bill Clinton to a stunning comeback re-election victory in 1996 after the president lost Congress to the Republicans two years before.
Called "the most influential private citizen in America" by Time Magazine, Morris helped steer Clinton to the center and away from the liberal policies he had pursued in his first two years in office.
