Barack Obama was elected based on the speeches and promises he made in 2008 and shortly after he was inaugurated. Unfortunately for America, he has failed to come through on those promises, especially those dealing with spending and the economy. The ten most egregious of these flip-flops are chronicled below:
In February 2008, Barack Obama promised that his PAYGO bill would force government to live within its means by ensuring that America would pay as it goes. After proclaiming himself to be some kind of fiscal champion, it was discovered that Obama wrote four HUGE exceptions into PAYGO that would total $2.8 TRILLION. And even though he included a $2.8 trillion loophole, he still increased the national debt by over $3.7 trillion.
During the 2008 campaign, Obama promises to reduce earmarks to 1994 levels. But after just two months in office, he signed an omnibus spending bill which included over 8,500 earmarks totaling $7.8 billion. His excuse? Democrats in Congress threatened to fight him over all of his other policies if he didn't give them what they wanted...and instead of doing what he promised and what was best for the country, Mr. Obama showed the country he has no backbone.
In January 2009, Obama claimed that he would tackle entitlement reform and that kicking the can down the road was no longer an option. Since then, what has been done to reform entitlements? The only thing Obama has done was to cut $500 billion from Medicare, hardly reform. Even though the Medicare Actuary has stated that Medicare will be insolvent by 2024, but what has Obama done? Demagogued any attempt to actually reform and save the programs, without offering any solutions of his own.
In January 2009, Obama said that he would make the difficult decisions to get our deficit under control. He also said he wouldn't punt the obligation. Instead, Obama...punted! He gave the tough choices to a fiscal commission...and then ignored their suggestions!
In just two years, Obama has managed to add $3.7 TRILLION to our national debt, increased the unemployment rate to a steady 9$, drove 3.8 million people to poverty and prolonged our recession and recovery. Without his policies, we most likely would have recovered by now, as evidenced by all other previous recessions. If he won't admit that his policies are destroying our country, then next November we have to VOTE HIM OUT!

In February 2009, Obama not only insisted that his stimulus would keep unemployment under 8%, but also said it would be careful with taxpayer money. What really happened? The stimulus failed on all accounts, unemployment skyrocketed, the jobs "created or saved" by the stimulus were lost once the money ran out and it did nothing to actually stimulate the economy.
Also in February of 2009, Obama pledged to cut the U.S. deficit in half by the end of his first term. So where are we now? Each of his three budgets so far have created record deficits, doubling what he promised. Even though Congressional Democrats said that his budget for FY2012 was a credible blueprint to get our country back on track, he realized it actually made our problems worse and therefore gave a do-over speech in April.
In March of 2009, Obama said that his pork-laden Omnibus was the last time something like that would happen. Hah! Immediately after that, Obama accepted Appropriations bills which contained over 9,000 earmarks totaling almost $16 billion!
In August 2009, Obama said that health care costs needed to be contained, which was his basis for ramming through Obamacare, which the country never wanted (and continues to want repealed). Instead, according to the Wall Street Journal, "U.S. Health Spending is projected to rise 9.2% in 2014, up from the 6.6% projected before the law took effect." So instead of making healthcare more affordable in order to keep its costs from bankrupting our country, Obamacare actually sped up the process!

In February of this year, Obama said his budget would not add to the debt, but instead used budgetary gimmicks he so often chastised. His 2012 budget actually adds $13 TRILLION in new debt over the next decade. Politifact even rated his statements as false since they would mislead Americans into thinking...that he wasn't lying!
In April of this year, Obama gave a speech outlining a new budget plan since his first attempt was proven a lie and a bust. However he never produced this new budget, and the Director of the Congressional Budget Office stated "we don't estimate speeches." How embarrassing! So now that Congressional Republicans have produced a budget, debated the debt limit and produced a plan to solve that, the "Gang of 6" is about to release its plan, Senate Democrats claim to have their own budget and have released that to a select few AND Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid have produced their own budget deficit solution - we still have not seen Obama's speech translated into legislation. There is no excuse for this, he has had MORE than enough time to produce this budget to be scored.

ERIC HOLDER'S GUNRUNNER SCANDAL FUNDED WITH $10 MILLION OF OBAMA'S STIMULUS MONEY ERIC HOLDER'S POORLY EXECUTED ATTEMPT TO DEMOLISH THE SECOND AMENDMENT
There is a new little wrinkle in Attorney General Eric Holder's claims of ignorance regarding the Gunrunner Scandal – Holder's Department of Justice requested and received $10 million in funding specifically for "Project Gunrunner" as part of Obama's 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka the Stimulus Bill.
The damning evidence can be found on page 16 of the Act, under the heading "Department of Justice" and subheading "Office of Justice Programs"! According to the Library of Congress the section reads as follows:
"For an additional amount for 'State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance', $40,000,000, for competitive grants to provide assistance and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall be transferred to 'Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses' for the ATF Project Gunrunner."
Eric Holder not only knew about Gunrunner, he requested $10 million to fund it. The only question now is, how much did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?

"You've got people who are dead. You have weapons that are missing and you have an administration that doesn't seem to want to take any accountability for it," Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT).
Like something out of a bad conspiracy movie, it is beginning to appear that Holder agreed to the now infamous "Gunrunner/Gun Walking/Fast & Furious" program in part to help Second Amendment hating Leftists who sought to impose gun control by "proving" that law abiding American gun shops were responsible for Mexican gang violence.
The plan might have worked brilliantly were it not for one murdered U.S. border patrol agent and a handful of dedicated ATF agents brave and honorable enough to blow the whistle on their own organization's shameful sellout of the U.S. Constitution.
Even now, as the true cost and body count resulting from Holder's betrayal become evident, the Left just isn't ready to give up. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said in a statement that "no legitimate examination of this issue will be complete without analyzing our nation's gun laws, which allow tens of thousands of assault weapons to flood into Mexico from the United States every year, including fifty caliber sniper rifles, multiple AK variants, and scores of others." Rep. Cummings apparently does not care that it was the U.S. Government, not its citizens, who sent these guns – in violation of standing U.S. law – to Mexico in the first place. Anything to kill the Second Amendment – even killing our own brave border patrol field agents!

As the damning evidence and criminal implications mount, Eric Holder's Department of Justice seems intent upon stonewalling – adding contempt of Congress to the possible list of charges levied against the ATF and DOJ.
ATF supervisors, acting as Holder's "yes men" and co-conspirators have already been caught red handed in a web of lies poured upon a suspicious Congress and a shocked nation. While supervisors told the House Oversight Committee that no guns were ever allowed across the border, whistle blowing ATF field agents have provided ample evidence to the contrary. For every document the ATF powerbrokers have refused to turn over, brave agents-on-the-ground have turned over their own records, including emails from the very supervisors denying "Project Gun Walker" (now being called "Project Gunrunner" by the mainstream media) which, in the higher-ups' own words and directives, confirms the entire gun walking operation.
ATF supervisors, surprised that their lies had been exposed, are now refusing to turn documents over to House Oversight Chairman Chairman Darrell Issa's investigators, claiming the need for redaction of sensitive and classified information. Chairman Issa has made it clear that he wants these documents unmolested. But given the current state of our criminal government, it is doubtful he will receive the evidence any time soon, if at all.

The DOJ/ATF "Gun Walker" scandal isn't the first time Eric Holder's name has come up in association with gun runners and terrorist organizations. Just a few years ago Holder acted as defense attorney for one of the largest gun running scandals in recent history.

In 2007, then private attorney Eric Holder defended the group that funneled $1.7 million into the Columbian group AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) – a U.S. designated terrorist organization. In addition to funding, Chiquita International Brands (CIB) helped the group illegally import over 3,000 AK-47s and 5 million rounds of ammunition into a country ripped apart by drug wars. And Eric Holder not only defended CIB, he initially argued to the court that CIB had done nothing wrong. When that did not work, he helped CIB negotiate a relatively small fine and eliminate legal penalties for the CIB employees who facilitated the illicit weapons transactions.

Now it comes to light that Eric Holder's own U.S. Department of Justice, through its reporting agency the ATF, instituted a policy of assisting in the illegal export of guns to Mexican drug cartels. ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) agents reportedly not only turned a blind eye toward illegal gun sales, field agents were forced by superiors to actively facilitate the transfers. And in at least one case, that of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, the cartels used those "gun walked" weapons to murder U.S. officers.
In his recent testimony before Congress, Eric Holder claimed absolutely no knowledge of the "Gun Walker" program. But given his previous work with gun runners, it is not far-fetched to imagine that Holder not only knew, but had a large hand in the program.

Frankly, the ongoing DOJ/ATF "Gun Walker" scandal represents only the latest in a long line of disgraces associated with Attorney General Eric Holder, including numerous instances of his refusal to enforce or even abide by the law, such as the New Black Panthers voter intimidation case, the ACORN Voter corruption and funding scandals, federal court orders regarding "ObamaCare" and Congressional subpoenas, and his shocking dereliction of duty regarding the Defense of Marriage Act. Rather than stand as the "top cop" and ultimate sentinel and protector of our nation's rule of law, Holder seems to be far more interested in traducing the law to suit his own cronies, radical friends, colleagues, business associates – plus random "clients" and high bidders. How much longer will we tolerate corruption and outright trampling of the Constitution from America's highest law enforcement office? Our current Attorney General is not fit to lead the Department of Justice. ERIC HOLDER MUST GO!

Despite spending two months and over $10 million to rough up, marginalize, and cause "fear and loathing" of Sharron since the primary, the latest Las Vegas Review-Journal poll shows Harry Reid only up by one point!
And this isn't just one aberrant poll saying Reid can be beaten.
The poll before that showed Sharron and Harry tied, 47-47 percent.
And the poll before that one had Sharron just one point behind Reid.
And the poll before that showed her just two points behind him.
In other words, the last four straight public polls in this race all show Sharron Angle well within the margin of error.
And when you add that the undecided usually break against the incumbent this is a fight we can win if we have the resources.
Or put another way, despite the blitzkrieg of negative attack ads which have blatantly assaulted Sharron's positions on almost every issue, she's still within striking distance.
That's the good news.
Now here's the bad news.
In order to stay in the game, Nevada political pundit Jon Ralston reports that the Angle campaign has pretty much spent every last dime of the estimated $2 million she raised after her primary win on June 8th.
That was just to survive and remain viable during Harry Reid's "Summer Slam" onslaught and make it through Labor Day, when the "real" campaign begins and kicks into high gear.
Sharron will, of course, continue to raise money for the fall campaign.
However, she's going to need a lot of from outside groups and organizations to combat the coming avalanche of special interest money from labor unions, trial lawyers, environmental extremists and government employees.
I could spend a lot time and space here outlining all of the things that make Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid so bad for Nevada, and even worse for the United States of America, but by then the election would be over.

CROCKETT was then the lion of Washington. I was a great admirer of his character, and, having several friends who were intimate with him, I found no difficulty in making his acquaintance. I was fascinated with him, and he seemed to take a fancy to me.
I was one day in the lobby of the House of Representatives when a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in its support—rather, as I thought, because it afforded the speakers a fine opportunity for display than from the necessity of convincing anybody, for it seemed to me that everybody favored it. The Speaker was just about to put the question when Crockett arose. Everybody expected, of course, that he was going to make one of his characteristic speeches in support of the bill. He commenced:
"Mr. Speaker—I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased, and as much sympathy for the sufferings of the living, if suffering there be, as any man in this House, but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it.
We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals have been made to us upon the ground that it is a debt due the deceased. Mr. Speaker, the deceased lived long after the close of the war; he was in office to the day of his death, and I have never heard that the government was in arrears to him. This government can owe no debts but for services rendered, and at a stipulated price. If it is a debt, how much is it? Has it been audited, and the amount due ascertained? If it is a debt, this is not the place to present it for payment, or to have its merits examined. If it is a debt, we owe more than we can ever hope to pay, for we owe the widow of every soldier who fought in the War of 1812 precisely the same amount.
There is a woman in my neighborhood, the widow of as gallant a man as ever shouldered a musket. He fell in battle. She is as good in every respect as this lady, and is as poor. She is earning her daily bread by her daily labor; but if I were to introduce a bill to appropriate five or ten thousand dollars for her benefit, I should be laughed at, and my bill would not get five votes in this House. There are thousands of widows in the country just such as the one I have spoken of, but we never hear of any of these large debts to them. Sir, this is no debt.
The government did not owe it to the deceased when he was alive; it could not contract it after he died. I do not wish to be rude, but I must be plain. Every man in this House knows it is not a debt. We cannot, without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as a charity.
Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much of our own money as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week’s pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks."
He took his seat. Nobody replied. The bill was put upon its passage, and, instead of passing unanimously, as was generally supposed, and as, no doubt, it would, but for that speech, it received but few votes, and, of course, was lost.
Like many other young men, and old ones, too, for that matter, who had not thought upon the subject, I desired the passage of the bill, and felt outraged at its defeat. I determined that I would persuade my friend Crockett to move a reconsideration the next day.
Previous engagements preventing me from seeing Crockett that night, I went early to his room the next morning and found him engaged in addressing and franking letters, a large pile of which lay upon his table.
I broke in upon him rather abruptly, by asking him what devil had possessed him to make that speech and defeat that bill yesterday. Without turning his head or looking up from his work, he replied:
"You see that I am very busy now; take a seat and cool yourself. I will be through in a few minutes, and then I will tell you all about it."
He continued his employment for about ten minutes, and when he had finished he turned to me and said: "Now, sir, I will answer your question. But thereby hangs a tale, and one of considerable length, to which you will have to listen."
I listened, and this is the tale which I heard:
SEVERAL YEARS AGO I was one evening standing on the steps of the Capitol with some other members of Congress, when our attention was attracted by a great light over in Georgetown. It was evidently a large fire. We jumped into a hack and drove over as fast as we could. When we got there, I went to work, and I never worked as hard in my life as I did there for several hours. But, in spite of all that could be done, many houses were burned and many families made homeless, and, besides, some of them had lost all but the clothes they had on. The weather was very cold, and when I saw so many women and children suffering, I felt that something ought to be done for them, and everybody else seemed to feel the same way.
The next morning a bill was introduced appropriating $20,000 for their relief. We put aside all other business and rushed it through as soon as it could be done. I said everybody felt as I did. That was not quite so; for, though they perhaps sympathized as deeply with the sufferers as I did, there were a few of the members who did not think we had the right to indulge our sympathy or excite our charity at the expense of anybody but ourselves. They opposed the bill, and upon its passage demanded the yeas and nays. There were not enough of them to sustain the call, but many of us wanted our names to appear in favor of what we considered a praiseworthy measure, and we voted with them to sustain it. So the yeas and nays were recorded, and my name appeared on the journals in favor of the bill.
The next summer, when it began to be time to think about the election, I concluded I would take a scout around among the boys of my district. I had no opposition there, but, as the election was some time off, I did not know what might turn up, and I thought it was best to let the boys know that I had not forgot them, and that going to Congress had not made me too proud to go to see them.
So I put a couple of shirts and a few twists of tobacco into my saddlebags, and put out. I had been out about a week and had found things going very smoothly, when, riding one day in a part of my district in which I was more of a stranger than any other, I saw a man in a field plowing and coming toward the road. I gauged my gait so that we should meet as he came to the fence. As he came up I spoke to the man. He replied politely, but, as I thought, rather coldly, and was about turning his horse for another furrow when I said to him: "Don’t be in such a hurry, my friend; I want to have a little talk with you, and get better acquainted."
He replied: "I am very busy, and have but little time to talk, but if it does not take too long, I will listen to what you have to say."
I began: "Well, friend, I am one of those unfortunate beings called candidates, and…"
"’Yes, I know you; you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time or mine. I shall not vote for you again.’
This was a sockdolager… I begged him to tell me what was the matter.
"Well, Colonel, it is hardly worthwhile to waste time or words upon it. I do not see how it can be mended, but you gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the Constitution, or that you are wanting in honesty and firmness to be guided by it. In either case you are not the man to represent me. But I beg your pardon for expressing it in that way. I did not intend to avail myself of the privilege of the Constitution to speak plainly to a candidate for the purpose of insulting or wounding you. I intend by it only to say that your understanding of the Constitution is very different from mine; and I will say to you what, but for my rudeness, I should not have said, that I believe you to be honest. But an understanding of the Constitution different from mine I cannot overlook, because the Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions. So you see, that while you are contributing to relieve one, you are drawing it from thousands who are even worse off than he. If you had the right to give anything, the amount was simply a matter of discretion with you, and you had as much right to give $20,000,000 as $20,000. If you have the right to give to one, you have the right to give to all; and, as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to any and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity, and to any amount you may think proper. You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other.
No, Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose. If twice as many houses had been burned in this county as in Georgetown, neither you nor any other member of Congress would have thought of appropriating a dollar for our relief. There are about two hundred and forty members of Congress. If they had shown their sympathy for the sufferers by contributing each one week’s pay, it would have made over $13,000. There are plenty of wealthy men in and around Washington who could have given $20,000 without depriving themselves of even a luxury of life. The Congressmen chose to keep their own money, which, if reports be true, some of them spend not very creditably; and the people about Washington, no doubt, applauded you for relieving them from the necessity of giving by giving what was not yours to give.
The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitution, the power to do certain things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else. Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution."
I have given you an imperfect account of what he said. Long before he was through, I was convinced that I had done wrong. He wound up by saying:
"So you see, Colonel, you have violated the Constitution in what I consider a vital point. It is a precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch its power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it, and no security for the people. I have no doubt you acted honestly, but that does not make it any better, except as far as you are personally concerned, and you see that I cannot vote for you."
I tell you I felt streaked. I saw if I should have opposition, and this man should go talking, he would set others to talking, and in that district I was a gone fawn-skin. I could not answer him, and the fact is, I did not want to. But I must satisfy him, and I said to him:
"Well, my friend, you hit the nail upon the head when you said I had not sense enough to understand the Constitution. I intended to be guided by it, and thought I had studied it full. I have heard many speeches in Congress about the powers of Congress, but what you have said there at your plow has got more hard, sound sense in it than all the fine speeches I ever heard. If I had ever taken the view of it that you have, I would have put my head into the fire before I would have given that vote; and if you will forgive me and vote for me again, if I ever vote for another unconstitutional law I wish I may be shot."
He laughingly replied:
"Yes, Colonel, you have sworn to that once before, but I will trust you again upon one condition. You say that you are convinced that your vote was wrong. Your acknowledgment of it will do more good than beating you for it. If, as you go around the district, you will tell people about this vote, and that you are satisfied it was wrong, I will not only vote for you, but will do what I can to keep down opposition, and, perhaps, I may exert some little influence in that way."
"If I don’t," said I, "I wish I may be shot; and to convince you that I am in earnest in what I say, I will come back this way in a week or ten days, and if you will get up a gathering of the people, I will make a speech to them. Get up a barbecue, and I will pay for it."
"No, Colonel, we are not rich people in this section, but we have plenty of provisions to contribute for a barbecue, and some to spare for those who have none. The push of crops will be over in a few days, and we can then afford a day for a barbecue. This is Thursday; I will see to getting it up on Saturday a week. Come to my house on Friday, and we will go together, and I promise you a very respectable crowd to see and hear you."
"Well, I will be here. But one thing more before I say good-bye… I must know your name."
"My name is Bunce."
"Not Horatio Bunce?"
"Yes."
"Well, Mr. Bunce, I never saw you before, though you say you have seen me; but I know you very well. I am glad I have met you, and very proud that I may hope to have you for my friend. You must let me shake your hand before I go."
We shook hands and parted.
It was one of the luckiest hits of my life that I met him. He mingled but little with the public, but was widely known for his remarkable intelligence and incorruptible integrity, and for a heart brimful and running over with kindness and benevolence, which showed themselves not only in words but in acts. He was the oracle of the whole country around him, and his fame had extended far beyond the circle of his immediate acquaintance. Though I had never met him before, I had heard much of him, and but for this meeting it is very likely I should have had opposition, and had been beaten. One thing is very certain, no man could now stand up in that district under such a vote.
At the appointed time I was at his house, having told our conversation to every crowd I had met, and to every man I stayed all night with, and I found that it gave the people an interest and a confidence in me stronger than I had ever seen manifested before.
Though I was considerably fatigued when I reached his house, and, under ordinary circumstances, should have gone early to bed, I kept him up until midnight, talking about the principles and affairs of government, and got more real, true knowledge of them than I had got all my life before.
I have told you Mr. Bunce converted me politically. He came nearer converting me religiously than I had ever been before. He did not make a very good Christian of me, as you know; but he has wrought upon my mind a conviction of the truth of Christianity, and upon my feelings a reverence for its purifying and elevating power such as I had never felt before.
I have known and seen much of him since, for I respect him—no, that is not the word—I reverence and love him more than any living man, and I go to see him two or three times every year; and I will tell you, sir, if everyone who professes to be a Christian lived and acted and enjoyed it as he does, the religion of Christ would take the world by storm.
But to return to my story: The next morning we went to the barbecue, and, to my surprise, found about a thousand men there. I met a good many whom I had not known before, and they and my friend introduced me around until I had got pretty well acquainted—at least, they all knew me.
In due time notice was given that I would speak to them. They gathered around a stand that had been erected. I opened my speech by saying:
"Fellow citizens—I present myself before you today feeling like a new man. My eyes have lately been opened to truths which ignorance or prejudice, or both, had heretofore hidden from my view. I feel that I can today offer you the ability to render you more valuable service than I have ever been able to render before. I am here today more for the purpose of acknowledging my error than to seek your votes. That I should make this acknowledgment is due to myself as well as to you. Whether you will vote for me is a matter for your consideration only."
I went on to tell them about the fire and my vote for the appropriation as I have told it to you, and then told them why I was satisfied it was wrong. I closed by saying:
"And now, fellow citizens, it remains only for me to tell you that the most of the speech you have listened to with so much interest was simply a repetition of the arguments by which your neighbor, Mr. Bunce, convinced me of my error.
"It is the best speech I ever made in my life, but he is entitled to the credit of it. And now I hope he is satisfied with his convert and that he will get up here and tell you so."
He came upon the stand and said:
"Fellow citizens—It affords me great pleasure to comply with the request of Colonel Crockett. I have always considered him a thoroughly honest man, and I am satisfied that he will faithfully perform all that he has promised you today."
He went down, and there went up from the crowd such a shout for Davy Crockett as his name never called forth before.
I am not much given to tears, but I was taken with a choking then and felt some big drops rolling down my cheeks. And I tell you now that the remembrance of those few words spoken by such a man, and the honest, hearty shout they produced, is worth more to me than all the honors I have received and all the reputation I have ever made, or ever shall make, as a member of Congress.
"NOW, SIR," concluded Crockett, "you know why I made that speech yesterday. I have had several thousand copies of it printed and was directing them to my constituents when you came in.
"There is one thing now to which I will call your attention. You remember that I proposed to give a week’s pay. There are in that House many very wealthy men—men who think nothing of spending a week’s pay, or a dozen of them for a dinner or a wine party when they have something to accomplish by it. Some of those same men made beautiful speeches upon the great debt of gratitude which the country owed the deceased—a debt which could not be paid by money, particularly so insignificant a sum as $10,000, when weighed against the honor of the nation. Yet not one of them responded to my proposition. Money with them is nothing but trash when it is to come out of the people. But it is the one great thing for which most of them are striving, and many of them sacrifice honor, integrity, and justice to obtain it."

CROCKETT was then the lion of Washington. I was a great admirer of his character, and, having several friends who were intimate with him, I found no difficulty in making his acquaintance. I was fascinated with him, and he seemed to take a fancy to me.
I was one day in the lobby of the House of Representatives when a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in its support—rather, as I thought, because it afforded the speakers a fine opportunity for display than from the necessity of convincing anybody, for it seemed to me that everybody favored it. The Speaker was just about to put the question when Crockett arose. Everybody expected, of course, that he was going to make one of his characteristic speeches in support of the bill. He commenced:
"Mr. Speaker—I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased, and as much sympathy for the sufferings of the living, if suffering there be, as any man in this House, but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it.
We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals have been made to us upon the ground that it is a debt due the deceased. Mr. Speaker, the deceased lived long after the close of the war; he was in office to the day of his death, and I have never heard that the government was in arrears to him. This government can owe no debts but for services rendered, and at a stipulated price. If it is a debt, how much is it? Has it been audited, and the amount due ascertained? If it is a debt, this is not the place to present it for payment, or to have its merits examined. If it is a debt, we owe more than we can ever hope to pay, for we owe the widow of every soldier who fought in the War of 1812 precisely the same amount.
There is a woman in my neighborhood, the widow of as gallant a man as ever shouldered a musket. He fell in battle. She is as good in every respect as this lady, and is as poor. She is earning her daily bread by her daily labor; but if I were to introduce a bill to appropriate five or ten thousand dollars for her benefit, I should be laughed at, and my bill would not get five votes in this House. There are thousands of widows in the country just such as the one I have spoken of, but we never hear of any of these large debts to them. Sir, this is no debt.
The government did not owe it to the deceased when he was alive; it could not contract it after he died. I do not wish to be rude, but I must be plain. Every man in this House knows it is not a debt. We cannot, without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as a charity.
Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much of our own money as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week’s pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks."
He took his seat. Nobody replied. The bill was put upon its passage, and, instead of passing unanimously, as was generally supposed, and as, no doubt, it would, but for that speech, it received but few votes, and, of course, was lost.
Like many other young men, and old ones, too, for that matter, who had not thought upon the subject, I desired the passage of the bill, and felt outraged at its defeat. I determined that I would persuade my friend Crockett to move a reconsideration the next day.
Previous engagements preventing me from seeing Crockett that night, I went early to his room the next morning and found him engaged in addressing and franking letters, a large pile of which lay upon his table.
I broke in upon him rather abruptly, by asking him what devil had possessed him to make that speech and defeat that bill yesterday. Without turning his head or looking up from his work, he replied:
"You see that I am very busy now; take a seat and cool yourself. I will be through in a few minutes, and then I will tell you all about it."
He continued his employment for about ten minutes, and when he had finished he turned to me and said: "Now, sir, I will answer your question. But thereby hangs a tale, and one of considerable length, to which you will have to listen."
I listened, and this is the tale which I heard:
SEVERAL YEARS AGO I was one evening standing on the steps of the Capitol with some other members of Congress, when our attention was attracted by a great light over in Georgetown. It was evidently a large fire. We jumped into a hack and drove over as fast as we could. When we got there, I went to work, and I never worked as hard in my life as I did there for several hours. But, in spite of all that could be done, many houses were burned and many families made homeless, and, besides, some of them had lost all but the clothes they had on. The weather was very cold, and when I saw so many women and children suffering, I felt that something ought to be done for them, and everybody else seemed to feel the same way.
The next morning a bill was introduced appropriating $20,000 for their relief. We put aside all other business and rushed it through as soon as it could be done. I said everybody felt as I did. That was not quite so; for, though they perhaps sympathized as deeply with the sufferers as I did, there were a few of the members who did not think we had the right to indulge our sympathy or excite our charity at the expense of anybody but ourselves. They opposed the bill, and upon its passage demanded the yeas and nays. There were not enough of them to sustain the call, but many of us wanted our names to appear in favor of what we considered a praiseworthy measure, and we voted with them to sustain it. So the yeas and nays were recorded, and my name appeared on the journals in favor of the bill.
The next summer, when it began to be time to think about the election, I concluded I would take a scout around among the boys of my district. I had no opposition there, but, as the election was some time off, I did not know what might turn up, and I thought it was best to let the boys know that I had not forgot them, and that going to Congress had not made me too proud to go to see them.
So I put a couple of shirts and a few twists of tobacco into my saddlebags, and put out. I had been out about a week and had found things going very smoothly, when, riding one day in a part of my district in which I was more of a stranger than any other, I saw a man in a field plowing and coming toward the road. I gauged my gait so that we should meet as he came to the fence. As he came up I spoke to the man. He replied politely, but, as I thought, rather coldly, and was about turning his horse for another furrow when I said to him: "Don’t be in such a hurry, my friend; I want to have a little talk with you, and get better acquainted."
He replied: "I am very busy, and have but little time to talk, but if it does not take too long, I will listen to what you have to say."
I began: "Well, friend, I am one of those unfortunate beings called candidates, and…"
"’Yes, I know you; you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time or mine. I shall not vote for you again.’
This was a sockdolager… I begged him to tell me what was the matter.
"Well, Colonel, it is hardly worthwhile to waste time or words upon it. I do not see how it can be mended, but you gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the Constitution, or that you are wanting in honesty and firmness to be guided by it. In either case you are not the man to represent me. But I beg your pardon for expressing it in that way. I did not intend to avail myself of the privilege of the Constitution to speak plainly to a candidate for the purpose of insulting or wounding you. I intend by it only to say that your understanding of the Constitution is very different from mine; and I will say to you what, but for my rudeness, I should not have said, that I believe you to be honest. But an understanding of the Constitution different from mine I cannot overlook, because the Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions. December 29, 2009 (LPAC)—The fascist secret clauses in the Senate health-care bill — attempting to forbid any future Congress from changing any of the provisions relating to the dictatorial, genocidal Independent Medicare Advisory Board — were inserted into the bill during closed-door meetings in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office, not by an amendment duly considered by the Senate.
The subsection of the Senate bill which we reprint below, entitled "LIMITATION ON CHANGES TO THE BOARD RECOMMENDATIONS," was not in the Senate Finance Committee bill as approved by the committee on October 13, and printed on October 19 — even though the committee version contain much of the exact language surrounding this subsection which was incorporated into the final Senate bill. Nor was it in the House bill HR 3962. This subsection first appeared in the so-called "Substitute Amendment" filed in the Senate on November 19, after a month's worth of secret discussions and negotiations in Reid's office. Unlike proceedings in committees, or on the Senate floor, there is no record of what took place in Reid's office, although a number of accounts reported that the Obama White House was deeply involved in the secret negotiations.

The language in the Nov. 19 "Substitute Amendment" became part of the final bill passed by the entire Senate on the morning of December 24. This subsection is found on pages 1001-2 of the final bill, as printed by the GPO.
Following is the subsection of the final Senate health-care bill, subsection (d)(3), part of Section 3403, which attempts to prohibit any future changes to IMAB recommendations, or even to this subsection itself!
The impudent tyranny of Sen. Harry Reid... Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada is proving once again the maxim that darkness hates the light. Buried in his massive amendment to the Senate version of Obamacare is Reid's anti-democratic poison pill designed to prevent any future Congress from repealing the central feature of this monstrous legislation!
Beginning on page 1,000 of the measure, Section 3403 reads in part: ". it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection."
In other words, if President Barack Obama signs this measure into law, no future Senate or House will be able to change a single word of Section 3403, regardless whether future Americans or their representatives in Congress wish otherwise!!
Note that the subsection at issue here concerns the regulatory power of the Independent Medicare Advisory Board (IMAB) to "reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending."
That is precisely the kind of open-ended grant of regulatory power that effectively establishes the IMAB as the ultimate arbiter of the cost, quality and quantity of health care to be made available to the American people. And Reid wants the decisions of this group of unelected federal bureaucrats to be untouchable for all time.
No wonder the majority leader tossed aside assurances that senators and the public would have at least 72 hours to study the text of the final Senate version of Obamacare before the critical vote on cloture. And no wonder Reid was so desperate to rush his amendment through the Senate, even scheduling the key tally on it at 1 a.m., while America slept.
True to form, Reid wanted to keep his Section 3403 poison pill secret for as long as possible, just as he negotiated his bribes for the votes of Senators Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Bernie Sanders of Vermont behind closed doors.
The final Orwellian touch in this subversion of democratic procedure is found in the ruling of the Reid-controlled Senate Parliamentarian that the anti-repeal provision is not a change in Senate rules, but rather of Senate "procedures." Why is that significant?
Because for 200 years, changes in the Senate's standing rules have required approval by two-thirds of those voting, or 67 votes rather than the 60 Reid's amendment received.
Reid has flouted two centuries of standing Senate rules to pass a measure in the dead of night that no senator has read, and part of which can never be changed. If this is not tyranny, then what is?

Parker Griffith's decision to step out of line and refuse to drink the Democratic Kool-Aid illustrates the Achilles Heel of the Democratic regime in Washington: The radical reign of Pelosi and Reid is held up by pillars of moderate and conservative Democrats who come from districts that regularly vote Republican. To survive in these red precincts, Democrats must act like Republicans, advocating a balanced budget, opposing big spending, and fighting against socialized medicine.
But, in Washington, Pelosi and Reid use their backing to bring a radical left leadership to Congress. Once it sufficed for a moderate Democrat merely to vote "no."
But American voters are onto their tricks and realize that a Democrat -- any Democrat -- will vote "yes" when his party leaders need it. The unanimous Senate Democratic support for Obamacare shows that there are really only two types of Congresspeople: Democrats and Republicans. All other shadings and adjectives are mere decoration.
The Senate deal-making that produced party unity has gone on in full public view, a vindication of Otto Von Bismark's wisdom in proclaiming that the public should never witness either a sausage being made or a law being passed.
We are watching, real time, as moderate Democrats fold for tiny, dirty little payoffs to their states and their egos. A moderate Democrat is just someone who will demand a higher price for caving into what Reid and Pelosi and Obama want him to do.
By focusing on his so-called moderation and hoping for his support, we just drive up his market price and elevate the bribe he will get. (We only know now about the publicly funded bribes these moderate members of Congress are getting.
We will learn, as the years unfold, what private commitments were exchanged for their health care votes. Follow the judgeships, ambassadorships, and cabinet positions to see where these folks land after their voters have thrown them out.)
So Parker Griffith realized -- as others will -- that merely voting against the legislation he did not like would not be sufficient to inoculate him against voter anger. To get out of the way of the looming tsunami of 2010, he had actually to switch political parties and become a Republican.
In 2010, voters will realize that their can vote only for one of the two parties. Individuals don't matter. Candidate personalities, preferences, backgrounds, and even ideologies don't matter.
Once the smart voter said that he votes for the person, not the party. Now, this once virtuous citizen would be a fool. There is no such thing as a moderate Democrat or a centrist or a conservative or a Reagan Democrat.

Three states -- Pennsylvania, New York and Florida -- all won protections for their Medicare Advantage beneficiaries at a time when the program is facing cuts nationwide.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) won a promise from Reid to support his plan to expand eligibility for health insurance.
The Senators from Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming will get the "Frontier Freebie" -- they'll see an increase in Medicare payments to hospitals and doctors, because "at least 50 percent of their counties are ‘frontier counties,' defined as those having a population density less than six people per square mile."
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the Senate health committee, got a provision inserted to increase Medicare payments to certain "low-volume hospitals" in Grinnell, Keokuk and Spirit Lake, treating limited numbers of Medicare patients.
Even the Democrats themselves are starting to complain about this obvious "Cash for Cloture" bribing going on. When Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) couldn't get past the reporters swarming Ben Nelson on her way to the cloture vote, she quipped, "I know I'm not as important as Senator Nelson. I didn't get the money for my state. I was too stupid."The word is getting out about these OUTRIGHT BRIBES for votes. And with that public scrutiny, several Democrats are wavering in their support for this bill

The Ant And The Grasshopper
OLD VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away...
Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MODERN VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.
CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast.
How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'
ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome " .
Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
President OSammy condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight.
Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share..
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.
CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast.
How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'
ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome " .
Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
President OSammy condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight.
Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share..
Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

Reid's Senate version of ObamaCare calls for:
Hiding the $2.8 Trillion price tag by not accounting for actual costs.
Major reductions in Medicare befits to seniors.
Major Tax Increases on every American to pay for it all.
Reid called for increasing the Medicare payroll tax.
The Senate ObamaCare creates a new marriage penalty by imposing a tax on individuals who make $200,000 annually but hitting married couples making just $50,000 more.
That's one of 17 new taxes imposed by the bill, which also creates a levy on elective plastic surgery - some call it "BOTAX" - and places a 40 percent excise tax on those who have generous health care plans.
"If you have insurance, you get taxed. If you don't have insurance, you get taxed. If you need a life-saving medical device, you get taxed. If you need prescription medicines, you get taxed," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, who is leading the fight against the bill.
Those legislators will be feeling the WRATH of voters next year -- but WE still have our work cut out for us NOW!
And we CAN defeat it there!
In fact... we can stop this bill COLD. Here's how:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) must now set the date for the next cloture vote to end all debate over Republican objection and the bill would be pushed onto the Senate calendar for a final vote.
BUT... Reid's sneak attack sets up the next critical cloture vote likely next week to PASS THE SENATE OBAMACARE BILL. This will require 60 votes to succeed -- and there's a GOOD CHANCE that Reid does NOT have those 60 votes!
If Republicans filibuster this motion, he will need 60 votes to invoke cloture and shut off debate.
If cloture fails the bill will die!
THIS IS IT -- one of our BEST chances to kill this bill, before it even gets off the ground!
WE HAVE NOT LOST. The bill pushed by Obama, passed by leftist Democrats in the House -- and rejected unanimously by all Senate Republicans -- must now be debated in the U.S. Senate...
The radical leftists in the SENATE were able to PAY OFF SENATORS to get their bill to the floor...
But we have STILL have a chance to stop them in the SENATE...TODAY!
Remember, if the Reid bill passes and is merged with the House Bill it is the worst of all possible bills. Both bills are chock full of every far-left special interest socialistic dream imaginable.
Liberals in the House AND the Senate ignored us when the majority said, "NO BAILOUT." They ignored us when the majority said, "NO FAKE STIMULUS."
Now, they're trying to ignore us when the majority demands with a clear voice, "NO GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTH CARE!"

We all remember when President Obama stood in front of a joint session of Congress -- and LIED.
He LIED when he said they weren't planning to set up "end-of-life panels" -- his cronies have promoted the idea for a long time now.
He LIED when he said his "reforms" wouldn't insure illegal aliens -- it has been clearly shown that there would be NO WAY to prevent this from happening.
He LIED when he said that his "government option" health care plan would not force taxpayers to pay for abortions -- the Obama-backed House bill would explicitly authorize the federal government insurance plan to pay for elective abortions and would explicitly authorize taxpayer subsidies for private abortion insurance.
The American people are TIRED of being LIED to -- which is why over ONE MILLION of us went to Washington, D.C., to bring the voice of the MAJORITY to the doorstep of Congress.
You see, the "sleeping giant" in America has been awoken... and we aren't going back to sleep... not while our own government tries to cram a socialist health care plan down our throats!
Well, they're trying to -- but WE can stop them, with YOUR help!
TAKE ACTION: Democrats were paid off to get passage on the usually perfunctory motion to proceed to debate. Republicans were unified and filibustered but even that, did not stop Reid from successfully getting 60 votes... after Democrats were given pork filled payoffs not to join that filibuster.

It just all depends on how you look at some things...Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Congressman Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory:
On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.' So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.

"Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed." NOW THAT's how it's done, Folks!
